Creating goals for yourself is key in health, business, or just life in general. Goals create something to work towards and add meaning to what can become a dull mundane day to day life. Goals should stretch and push us out of our comfort zones so that we can grow as people. Nothing truly worth having comes without some sort of hard work and journey to get there. Well crafted self goals are worth every fight and every moment of discomfort.
Here are some tips to creating successful life goals.
Creating Goals That Will Succeed
Be Specific
Goals should be specific and not general. For example, if someone says that their goal is to be healthier this year, that statement leaves a lot of room for gray. What is healthier? How are you going to be healthier? Instead, the goal should be, I want to go to the gym 3 times every week this year. Now we have a specific idea that will in itself will create a healthier life. This statement leaves no room for interpretation and is clear and defined.
Make Them Measurable
In the example of saying “my goal is to go to the gym 3 times every week” we now have a trackable, measurable goal. If you do not go 3 times, then you did not achieve your goal. There is no space for misinterpretation. This allows you to measure your success and creates real tangible results which will keep you invested in the journey.
Write Them Down
Write your goals down. When you write things down it not only helps you to remember it, but also takes the goal out of thought life and into real physical life. This is important for when things get difficult. A written goal is not just a thought you can push out of your head because it’s uncomfortable, but has taken life in written form and you have to physically throw it away if you want to ignore it.
Share Them
Lastly, share your goals with someone important. They will keep you accountable when the going gets tough and you are feeling defeated. They will be your cheerleader and celebrate with you in your victories. They care enough to make sure you do not fail.
